A Sinking Ship

When exactly did I decide it was a good idea to own one of man’s greatest liabilities? I really can’t put my finger on it!

I grew up around boats without ever really mixing with them; we spent our time windsurfing and kitesurfing instead. But the idea of a yacht, and of exploring the world in one, always appealed to me. I think it was the prospect of picking a direction and just setting off. No white lines telling you where you can and can’t go, no parking tickets (this turns out not to be true!), just an imagination of what’s out there and the persistence to get there.

So here I am in the spring of 2023, the owner of a 1963 Kim Holman ketch moored up in Falmouth. I’ve never owned a boat before, much less a 60 year old wooden one. Safe to say she needed a little TLC.

Before: hauled out in the boat lift, hull caked in growth below the waterline

After: fresh white topsides, a blue boot stripe and new red antifoul
